Pierre Gamayel, Christian leader in Lebanon - assassinated

Pierre Gemayel, Lebanese cabinet member and leader of the Lebanese Christians, was gunned down, shot in the head in the streets of Beirut. See the story here. I guess it doesn't pay to be a Gemayel. His uncle was previously assassinated. Right now, I am worried about the health and safety of Walid Jumblatt, leader of the Lebanese Druze. Thus far, no one as brought to justice for Hariri's assassination. I doubt anyone will be brought to justice for Gemayel. But I do worry that this was done by Hizballah, in an effort to force their way into the Lebanese government. Mustapha at Beirut Spring had this to say:
Samir Geagea, another Christian anti Syrian leader had warned a few days ago that the Syrians and their Lebanese supporters are attempting to assassinate two sitting ministers to complement the 6 that resigned, so that the government will be automatically dissolved...
Meanwhile, Hizballah has been arming itself to the teeth, with many thanks to UNIFIL. I truly believe war is afoot...again. UPDATE: It took longer than normal to blame the Jews with this one... but it was only a matter of time. - Steven

Syria is a Batthist state, and yet Baker is trying to ally with those weasels now. I bet Ostrich neck is behind this assasination, and I like that suggestion that if America withdraws from Iraq we go through Syria on the way out. We can't occupy them long-term, but we can seriously fuck them up.

Of course we should wait to see what happens, but I bet most of Lebanon's troubles are clearly due to Syria, and I don't see that changing unless Syria gets what it has coming.

RB> I'll give Israel a pass to do whatever they want to France or Germany, within reason.

Besides, any military giving the French a hard time is a rite of passage for young soldiers. When I was stationed in Germany, my unit aksed about new ideas for training and I always suggested we invade France to see how fast they'd surrender to a Finance unit :)

Germany better not say boo about anything Israel does. Not now, or for the next few centuries. They really lost that right to criticize any nation, as far as I am concerned.

Meanwhile I have some other comments for Syria and President Goofy: http://bloatedtick.blogspot.com/2006/11/sure-you-do-syria.html

That was not a tribute, it was a news item.

As far as Hizby and Israel goes...Israel has every right to fly over Lebanon, if UNIFIL is doing nothing to disarm Hizby (they aren't). The deal was Israel would leave, Hizby would disarm, and Israel would get their kidnapped soldiers back. Meanwhile, Hizby has been REarming, and the soldiers are still there, likely dead. The Israelis also never once fired upon the French, though the French did come close to firing upon the Israelis.

THAT is the complete picture, and given that, it makes total sense why Israel has flyovers - they need to know where the weapons are and where Hizby bases are, for what will likely be another war.

You’re right to worry, the next war will be Israel against Syria. Of course the real war is America against Iran, seeing as to how Iran has it’s dirty little fingers in everything destabilizing the region. Happy Thanksgiving everyone.
