I don't think the end of mankind would solve all the problems; we are so quick to blame ourselves. Species can still become extinct... but without humans the world will quickly adapt and return to a natural equilibrium.
I recall that the vast majority of now extinct species were killed off by the introduction of a poisonous gas into our atmosphere. That gas was oxygen. Granted these were very simple organisms, from back when Strom Thurmond was young.
Things do look grim in some regards, but I think humanity somehow pulls itself out of the fire just in time. I admit we have to work on improving our mistakes, but I don't see Soylent Green as prophecy, either.

People say 'save the earth,' as if it needs saving. The earth is not in any danger! It is PEOPLE who are an endangered species!
