I think religion should be taught, as it is important from a theoretical and philosophical perspective. Indoctrination, on the other hand, is equivalent to brainwashing. This is indoctrination.
I don't think most religion is really that important except to understand the forces of history. Most all modern philosophy and science that is useful has more or less rejected conservative religious thought systems, and liberal religious thought ends up becoming so vague as to be useless on its own terms.
So, I don't think religion is the important except from a socilogical perspective.
I do believe that religion needs to be understood, so that people can understand why so many people are crazy. However, religious and secular philosophy also do intertwine, and it is necessary to be a student of the world's religions to be a true philosophy student.
As far as sociology and psychology - I agree that it is important to study religion from those perspectives as well.

This is what really struck me;
"'"What else is there for a man to do but sacrifice his son for his religion?""
Good fucking lord.
And people wonder why I think teaching minors about religion should be illegal.
