Radicalization of Young British Muslims

A new poll came out, showing that 40% of Muslims aged 16-24 would prefer to live under Sharia law in the UK. 36% of the 'young-uns' believe in death for apostasy, 13% admire al-Qaeda, and 74% of young people believe women should wear the veil (as opposed to 19% of those over 55). (see poll results here) A full 84% also said they did not experience 'Islamophobia.'

Think about this for a second. Digest this.

These are not young people in Afghanistan or Saudi Arabia. These are young people in the UK.

Think about this some more.

Then think about multiculturalism, and wonder about how effective it has been.

A new paradigm is clearly needed. After you think about that, then consider the recent debate between Ken Livingstone ("Red Ken," mayor of London), and Daniel Pipes. Consider the points they brought up.

And wonder about what sort of world we are heading for, with above numbers like those.

This is what I find most striking;

""and 74% of young people believe women should wear the veil (as opposed to 19% of those over 55).""

And now that I think of it, when I see photos of radical muslims mprotesting in England, like during the mohammed drawing vents, I rarely see any face that looks over 30-35. Its almost always younger ones.

Why? o_O

Maybe I'll have a clearer answer when I've been up longer then 20 minutes.

I find those number, in light of the "it's just a tiny minority of extremists" argument, to be most interesting indeed.

I did not know that 36% to 74% was a "tiny minority."

Thanks for stopping by, RT. I'll add your blog to my list of places to check....

jason - Because they are impressionable angry young men. Perfect recruits for terrorist cells, as they can be brain washed quite easily. There is an aspect of psychology to terrorism, that tends to be put to one side.

I think another problem in regards to the UK are faith schools. They seperate children of different religious and ethnic background, so children grow up and did not mix. Which leads to problems like some young men going down the terrorism route.

I think some (but not all) muslim men get treated like kings by their mothers when they are growing up and when they hit the real world, they are treated like everyone else, which makes them angry.
multi cultures can work, but it has to be based on a shared understanding of each culture and the wider history of the UK. That can only be attained through the education system, which is why faith schools can be a negative aspect of the education system.
This goes for all faith schools. I'd rather schools taught a wider range of topics in religious education rather than concentrating one religion all of the time.

Kevin,

I agree with you as to some of the root causes, however, the notion that it's cool to have seperate schools for seperate cultures is at the core of the 'multi-culti' philosophy. I believe this philosophy is broken.

Yeah, I would say thats right. I've said similar things about the Americans who are so devoted to supporting Palestine. For many, they're just young people high on emotion who want something to believe in, to give themselves a feeling of meaning, and importance.

""""I think another problem in regards to the UK are faith schools. They seperate children of different religious and ethnic background, so children grow up and did not mix. Which leads to problems like some young men going down the terrorism route. """"

Yeah, this makes sense, and its why I oppose efforts to fund religious xian schools in the U.S. via vouchers. Even if, at first, it seems a legitimate "alternative" to public schools, you only have to look to instances such as the U.K. to see where such segregating efforts can eventually lead.

As I've said before, one of the things that is vital to ending things like the "culture war" in the U.S. and to solve the problems with immigrants in Europe, is that people need to learn to live with people they don't like and accept it. But we can't do that if people segregate and ghettoize themselves, and even moreso if they do this to their children.

""""I think some (but not all) muslim men get treated like kings by their mothers when they are growing up and when they hit the real world, they are treated like everyone else, which makes them angry. """"

That wouldn't surprise me. You can see a similar, les extreme manifestation of this in the far right religionists of the U.S., especially many of those coming of age now who were raised in repressive homogenous environments all their lives. When they enter a world that is not controlled by their parents/church/community, they are often bewildered, and are so unused to people freely disagreeing with them and acting differently than what they think is approved, that they react with anger and temper tantrums.

I think this sort of thing provides the best arguments for open public schools with little restrictions on dress and expression. Kids need to learn from a very early age how to mix and live with those who are different, otherwise they grow up as isolated, brainwashed extremists who enter the world and only desire to remake it in their own image.

It's even worse than what you just said.

Think of things this way. The immigration policies of the Western world are generally based on nationality. So now it's harder for an Egyptian, such as Sandmonkey, to get a Visa to the US, than say, a terror-sympathizer from the UK. I believe that the world needs to seriously rethink it's Visa and immigration policies.

As far as the solution to this problem? I think it's clear - political correctness needs to be thrown out the window, and the focus should be on a unity of culture.

I doubt any of this will happen. I predict things will get much worse before they even *might* get better.

I don't think it's JUST about the schools. Look, we have plenty of religious schools in the United States (Catholic, Jewish Day schools, etc.), and no one goes blowing himself up. My college classmates mostly came from Catholic schools and were very polite, well-rounded, and open-minded, compared to your typical college student. Many of people at Fordham come from a religious background, living in Jewish communities, and attending Jewish schools - and yet they are very open to everyone else and do not propagate hatred or intolerance towards those who are different. In other words, separate cultural and religious communities don't have to mean trouble - even within such communities people can be taught to be open towards others. That's not happening in Muslim schools and homes in Britain. It's not about the schools specifically, it's about the community as a whole.

Irina:
It's not happening because, as was pointed out above, Islam does not encourage tolerance or freethinking. It is a violent, imperialist religion and culture, and until that is addressed, somehow, the non-musim world will be saddled with the problems of Islamic terrorism.

I cannot particularly figure out why the young generation of British Muslims are so much more radical than their parents, but in any case, step one to the solution is to acknowledge the problem.

Sadly, I do not believe most people are even willing to acknowledge the problem.

56% of arabic speaking Egyptians in a poll in a weekly paper support killing and/or stealing from non-muslims.

Islamic radicalism is MAINSTREAM ISLAM!!! Or at least as it is practiced today.

We also just found out that the UK is foiling a major plot every 6 weeks, twice what was previously public knowledge.

With these numbers, we cannot just try to pick and choose good from bad, that method will cause us to become a police state, where nobody can travel, speak or own guns or learn electronics or buy cell phones etc, or we become like Israel, with bombings every other week.

We must end this multicultural BS, Stop muslims from immigrating, and integrate the hell out of the ones that are here already. We cannot be afraid to deport the freaks, and we have do do something about the damn lawyers that tie up our courts and tie the gov't hands in going after them.

A lawyer is sueing because the military posted a picture of Saddam with a noose around his neck in Guantanimo, because it intimidated the prisoners!!! The Dems are introducing a bill to prevent profiling passengers!!!

We have lost it. Check this out, the "prayer" at the Democratic National Committee meeting:

It is a race to see if Americans wake up before we find ourselves int the same boat England is in, and they are in a race to see if they can reverse their slide into what France has become.

Why are people so stupid that they cannot see this stuff coming until their neighbor is already lost?
